TREKKING IN CAPPADOCIA WITH SNOWSHOES

TREKKING IN CAPPADOCIA WITH SNOWSHOES

Writer: Kerem Karaerkek
August 2008

Cappadocia is differently beautiful during winter. The snow accrues on the top of fairy chimneys, shapes crinkly on the formations and gives a different blaze to the region, also gives you different kinds of delight as you walk in it. If you would like to taste this delight in Cappadocia nature, pleas do not forget to take a note about dates of the trekking tours of Middle Earth Travel.

Trekking, for most, is an activity for the spring and summer months. It is not very interesting to walk in wet shoes, on muddy paths in the cold winter days.  The real beauty of winter is snow. We all like to walk in the pure white snow but that is only possible for a short time. Especially if the snow is deep it becomes tiring to walk after a few minutes. Now it is possible to enjoy the beauty of winter without suffering that much.
There is a winter activity recently becoming popular amongst walkers in Europe and the US:   Snowshoeing. You will remember snowshoes as tools that look like tennis rackets from old mountaineering movies. The ones used nowadays are modern plastic versions of those.  They don’t require special shoes to use. They fit to any normal winter boots and they are fairly easy to use.  At first you feel yourself like a duck but after 10-15 min walking you quickly get used to them. And when you find out you can walk in (or on we should say) even in deep, powder snow without much sinking, your love for the snowshoes grow rapidly.
The snowshoes work with a simple principle. They spread the pressure you apply to the snow surface.  They are equipped with metal dents under them that help you walk up or down slopes without sliding.
Those who know what great scenes the snow creates on the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia will at once understand what a privilege it will be to enjoy that beauty without struggling with walking in deep snow.  If you don’t belong to that privileged group yet this winter it may be right time for you to go snowshoeing in Cappadocia.
